About the Percent Off Calculator
Percentage discounts are quick to eyeball but easy to get slightly wrong doing mental math at the register, especially with an odd percentage or an odd price — and the mistake compounds fast if you're stacking multiple discounts, since a second percent-off applies to the already-discounted price, not the original.
This calculator gives the exact savings amount and final price for a single discount, useful for checking a sale tag, comparing two different percent-off deals on similarly priced items, or just skipping the mental math.
Everything you enter here — the price, the discount — stays in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a percent-off discount by hand?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal) to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the original price for the final cost — for example, 30% off $50 saves $15, for a final price of $35.
If two discounts are stacked, do the percentages just add together?
No — stacked percentage discounts apply sequentially, each to the already-reduced price, not to the original. 20% off followed by another 10% off is not the same as 30% off in one step; it works out to a slightly smaller total discount.
Is percent off calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax price?
That depends on the store, but discounts are most commonly applied to the pre-tax price, with sales tax then calculated on the reduced amount — check the receipt or store policy if it matters for your comparison.
How do I work out what percentage off a sale actually is, if I only know the original and sale prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide that difference by the original price, then multiply by 100 — that gives you the percent-off figure the store is advertising.
