About the Hours Calculator

Hourly employees rarely get a clean number of hours on a timesheet — a shift that starts at 8:00, ends at 5:00, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch in the middle works out to 8.5 hours, not the 9 the raw clock times suggest. This calculator does that subtraction for you, then goes a step further and estimates the actual paycheck, splitting regular hours from overtime and applying a 1.5× multiplier to whatever crosses your daily threshold.

It's aimed at the moment before payday, not after: checking a timesheet looks right before submitting it, estimating what a shift is going to pay before you work it, or a manager sanity-checking hours across a pay period. Freelancers and contractors doing client billing by the hour use the same math, just without the overtime rule applying.

The overtime threshold defaults to 8 hours a day, which is the common daily-overtime convention in the US, but it's editable — some jobs use a 40-hour weekly threshold instead, or a different daily cutoff entirely, so adjust it to match whatever rule actually governs your pay.

How it’s calculated

Worked hours are the raw clock-out-minus-clock-in span with the unpaid break subtracted; if that span crosses midnight, the calculator adds a full day to keep the subtraction positive. Regular hours are worked hours capped at the overtime threshold, and overtime is whatever remains above it, paid at 1.5× the entered hourly rate — a standard time-and-a-half calculation, though your employer's actual overtime rules may differ by state or contract.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times?

Enter your clock-in and clock-out times and any unpaid break length — the calculator subtracts the break from the raw span between the two times to give total hours worked.

Is the break time paid or unpaid in this calculation?

The break field is treated as unpaid time and subtracted from the worked hours entirely; if your break is paid, set it to 0 so it doesn't reduce your hours.

How is overtime pay calculated here?

Hours up to the overtime threshold (8 hours a day by default) are paid at your regular rate, and anything beyond that is paid at 1.5× that rate — you can change the threshold if your job uses a different daily or weekly overtime rule.

Does this account for state-specific overtime laws?

No — overtime rules vary by state, industry and sometimes union contract (some require overtime after 40 hours a week rather than 8 a day, for instance), so treat the result as an estimate and adjust the threshold to match the rule that actually applies to you.

What if my shift goes past midnight?

Enter the clock-in and clock-out times as usual — if the clock-out time is earlier in the day than the clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours automatically.
